Breaking News from Izmir, Turkey

On Thursday NBC News reported there was a deal between the Whitehouse and Turkish officials to release Andrew Brunson. Today it became a reality. After 24 months of imprisonment and house arrest, Pastor Brunson has been allowed to come home to the U.S.

Unfortunately, the Turkish judge convicted Brunson of “providing aid to terrorist groups without being a member.” This was in spite of facts to the contrary and contradicting witnesses against him. He was sentenced to three years in prison with time served and allowed to leave the country. This means Pastor Brunson is a free man. However, it was only after the Whitehouse offered to lift sanctions against Turkey that the judge decided to set Brunson free.

Open Doors USA CEO David Curry responded to the release saying “Open Doors USA is relieved to hear of Pastor Andrew Brunson’s release from house arrest to freedom. Turkey has done the right thing in allowing him to return to his home country. I applaud President Trump for the unrelenting pressure his administration applied to Turkey on this matter, in part through tariffs and sanctions. The president has rightly recognized that economic leverage can help bring positive change for human rights and can convey a powerful message of solidarity with oppressed religious minorities, especially persecuted Christians. In this case, it worked and was helpful in the release of an American Christian.”

Brunson was seen hugging his wife and crying tears of joy as he left the courtroom. He was surrounded by a delegation of Americans. Pastor Brunson, speaking in perfect Turkish, said, “I’m an innocent man — I love Jesus, and I love this country.” He should arrive at his home in North Carolina with a few days.

Please take a few moments of your time to thank the Lord for his grace and providential care of Andrew and his wife, and for giving Pastor Brunson back his freedom.
